The Siberian scientific aviation institute named after S.A. Chaplygin is located at Novosibirsk and is the biggest aviation research center of the East Russia.

This institute is equipped with apparels to heat up and cool down materials, this is why it seems that they worked on the Buran’s heat shield.

Buran-Energia

Today buran-energia.com has 5 years. It has been 5 years since I have started this project to make a website in french/english about the Buran space shuttle, and with the researchs I did I discovered other Soviets space projects (such as Spiral and BOR, …) which gave me the the idea to speak about them, and now the website is dedicated not only to Buran but to the Soviets and Russians space shuttle.

I still have a lot of subjects to speak about and informations to complete about Buran (ground installations, landing system, …).

So stay tunned.

Last week in Moscow, at the Gorky park, was a snowboard contest the Adrenalin Games 2012.

Some installations (stairs and quarters) were made for the competitor in front of the Buran OK-TVA whereas a giant screen was settled behind her. During the show animations were displayed on the shuttle and the screen giving a striking effect.

It is with a simple press release that the Russian press agency (RIA Novosti) announced the death of the test pilot Pyotr Ostapenko on April 8, 2012, at the age of 83.

Pyotr Ostapenko worked all his career (1958-1981) for the design bureau MiG as a test pilot. He flew more than 5000 hours, did more than 10000 landings, and held 8 world records of which some are not smashed.
Thus he worked during the 70s on the space program Spiral as a test pilot of EPOS 105-11 (analog plane of the space plane EPOS).

During his career he helped develop no less than 64 planes such as MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-27, MiG-29 and the MiG-31. His contribution to the school of test pilots was very important.

He was awarded of :

  • Order of the Red Star (1964)
  • Order of the Red Banner (1966)
  • Lenin’s Order (1971)
  • Hero of the USSR (1971)
  • Test Pilot of the USSR (1973)
  • Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1974)

25th anniversary of the Energia’s flight

Energia-Polyus

Today we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Energia‘s flight on May 15, 1987.

It is at 21h30 (Moscow time) that the rocket was launched for the first time with the Polious space combat station as a payload. The launch went fine, despite a trouble during take off, but a malfunction in the orientation system didn’t allowed it to reach it’s orbit.

Polyus, star wars, MIR-2, USSR

The second and last launch of Energia took place one year later with Buran on November 15, 1988.

Even if Energia was a versatile, adjustable, very powerful (100t in low earth orbit) and reliable (2 launch and 2 success) rocket, the lack of large scale projects and the collapse of the USSR buried it. Only its boosters made from Zenit launcher are still used today.

Tower

This strange tower, belonging to the institute цнии ртк (Central Institute of Search and Experiments for Robotics and Cybernetics), always raised questions about its purpose. Some days ago a group of young people, living in the neighborhood, managed to get inside and see what it holds.

This is what they discovered, the Buran‘s remote manipulator system.

Few months ago I visited the museum of the Peenemunde launch base, at the seaside of the Baltic sea in ex-GDR.

This museum is very interesting even if most of the former installations were destroyed.

TV Roscosmos published a reporting about Buran-Energia with an complete interview of Oleg Baklanov, member of the CPSU Central Committee (1988-1991) responsible for issues of state defense. He was a strong supporter of this project and ask for the developing of such powerful launcher to continue the space exploration and increase the transportations conditions of cosmonauts.

Alexander Ananoff or the first astronaut

Alexander Ananoff

Alexander Ananoff was a person who lived his passion, the space exploration, and he dedicated to it a large part of his life.

This untiring self-taught man made it possible for the people to discover, since the 30′s, the advantages of space exploration for mankind. By virtue of his popularizer talent he succeeded to pass down his passion throughout conferences, symposiums, and publications, where many of his contemporary looked at him with contempt.

Thus, amongst other things, he helped Hergé for the redaction of the Tintin’s adventures on the Moon and he created the first International Astronautical Congress in 1950.

Alexandre Ananoff, l’Astronaute méconnu (Alexander Ananoff, the unknown Astronaut) written by Pierre-François Mouriaux and Philippe Varnoteaux is an exciting biography which enlighten us on the not well known life of the first French space exploration popularizer.

This year heavy rains little bit messed up this new edition of the MAKS air show 2013, especially the flights demonstrations, but at least some historic planes were exposed for the joy of visitors. Among them the VMT-Atlant, this plane made the two flights of the Energia rocket possible. Indeed, it was the only mean to safely transport parts of the rocket (and the shuttle Buran) from Moscow to Baikonur.

Today we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Buran’s flight.

The start was given at 6 o’clock AM (Moscow time) under a thick cloud cover. The flight went through without specifics troubles and the shuttle landed smoothly on the runway of the Yubileyniy’s airport, specially designed for this purpose.

This flight is a first in the history of space exploration because it’s the first automatic flight of a space shuttle. Only the de-orbit command was transmitted from the ground.

Unfortunately, the financial and political situation of the USSR at that time was disastrous, the program was expensive and priorities has changed. The Energia-Buran program is slowly paused. There will be no further launches, despite the many opportunities that allowed the shuttle. Even the launcher Energia is abandoned.

Since then, no manned shuttle has reiterated the achievement of being driven solely by the on-board computer.

This program has been the swansong of the Soviet Cosmonautics.

Shuttle OK-TVA

The Moscow’s Mayor annonced yesterday in an Interfaks report that the Buran Shuttle OK-TVA will be moved from the Gorky Parc to the VNDKh (actually VVTs).

The definitive destination is not yet decided but should be the pavilion 20.

The dismantling of the shuttle will take one month after the final decision is taken.

OK-TVA transport

During the night 5 to 6 of July 2014 the Buran OK-TVA was transported from the Gorky park to the VDNKh park. It has been there since 1995 after being a restaurant, a tourist attraction and then a shelter for bicycles.

It is now in the VDNKh parc right in front of the Vostok rocket (the same used by Gagarine).

Soon will be an exposition inside the shuttle.

At the begining of June Ralph Mirebs took beautifull pictures of the Burans shuttles OK-1.02 and OK-MT in the MZK building at Baikonur.

Last week he fought back and slipped inside the vertical test building of the Energia launcher. Actually there is inside a full-size mock-up of the Energia M launcher which was a less powerfull version of Energia intented for launching less massive satellites (34t instead of 100t in low earth orbit).

Buran VDNKh

On August 15 the interactif museum « Buran » opened, in the VDNKh parc.

The museum firstly shows a video explaining the Buran-Energia project, then in the payload bay pictures of the Buran’s assembly are shown, finally the visit ends with a view of the cockpit.

This shuttle is the test model OK-TVA which was moved last year in June 2014.
